CHAPTER 23

Evie woke with a shaft of sunlight on her face. She blinked against it and ran her fingers through her mop of hair, pushing it out of her eyes. The sun was bright enough that, for a moment, alarm snapped through her, certain that she’d overslept until she heard the steady, rumbling breaths of the triad sleeping soundly around her. Her lips curled into a smile, and she squinted against the sunlight as she peered at each of them, their faces relaxed in slumber. Thral’s ear twitched as if alert when she sat up and scooted to the edge of the bed, but he didn’t otherwise move. That one idiosyncrasy forced her to muffle a laugh as her heart melted just a little more.

She bit her lip, wanting to linger there, but she shook her head and forced herself to get up. As much as she wanted to crawl back into that cuddle pile, especially when she still felt so sore and tender, she needed to get cleaned up and get on her way. However long they were going to sleep, having exhausted themselves so thoroughly the night before, they wouldn’t remain asleep for long.

Keeping her steps light, Evie grabbed her bag and clothes and headed toward the bathroom. Avoiding the mirror and the guilt she would see in her face reflected back at her, she quickly wetted a cloth and wiped herself down as she sternly reminded herself that what she was doing was for the best. That her heart clenched in protest was beside the point. This wasn’t about what she wanted. She didn’t want to leave them. She didn’t want to think of the betrayal they would feel when they woke to find her gone. But it was necessary, and when it came right down to it, her conscience was being unreasonable.

When I get back, I’ll explain. They’ll understand why I had to do this, and everything will be fine. I’m coming back, after all. They know that.

So why then, if this was right, did it sound like she was trying so very hard to convince herself of it? Scowling at that observation, she pulled on her clothes and shoved her feet into her boots. It was ridiculous, but she couldn’t quite get rid of that heaviness in her chest as she slipped down the stairs and out the door. Nor did it feel right when her heart began to race the moment that she set foot outside as the gravity of what she was doing hit her along with a punch of endorphins.

Evie felt sick at that moment and hunted all at once. She was experiencing the conflicting desire to turn back and sneak back inside before anyone missed her and to flee as fast as she could before she was hunted down and caught. The need to put distance between them if she was going to do this made the hair on her neck prickle, and she picked up her pace, breaking into a
